To provide clean drinking water, water flows from the more concentrated side (with more contaminants) of the RO membrane to the less concentrated side (with fewer contaminants). The permeate is the freshwater produced. The concentrated water that remains is known as waste or brine. A semipermeable membrane has small pores that allow contaminants to pass through while allowing water molecules to pass through. Water becomes more concentrated as it passes through the membrane in osmosis to achieve equilibrium on both sides. However, reverse osmosis prevents contaminants from entering the less concentrated side of the membrane. When pressure is applied to a volume of saltwater, for example, the salt is left behind and only clean water flows through. A reverse osmosis system uses a prefilter to remove sediment and chlorine from the water before forcing it through a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved solids. After leaving the RO membrane, the water passes through a postfilter to polish it before entering a dedicated faucet. The number of prefilters and post-filters in a reverse osmosis system determines the stage.
