Water flows from the more concentrated side (with more contaminants) of the RO membrane to the less concentrated side to provide clean drinking water (with fewer contaminants). The permeate is the produced fresh water. Waste or brine is the concentrated water that remains. Small pores in a semipermeable membrane allow contaminants to pass through while allowing water molecules to pass through. To achieve equilibrium on both sides, water becomes more concentrated as it passes through the membrane in osmosis. Reverse osmosis, on the other hand, prevents contaminants from entering the less concentrated side of the membrane. When a volume of saltwater is compressed, for example, the salt is left behind and only clean water flows through. A prefilter removes sediment and chlorine from the water before forcing it through a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved solids in a reverse osmosis system. After leaving the RO membrane, the water is polished by a postfilter before entering a dedicated faucet. The stage of a reverse osmosis system is determined by the number of prefilters and post-filters.
