A demineralizer is a system that uses an ion exchange chemical process to remove dissolved ionic compounds (salts) from water. A DM Plant, a Deionized Water System, or a Demineralizer are all terms for the same thing. A typical Demineralization Plant consists of two vessels (DM Plant). All positively charged ions (sodium, calcium, iron, and copper, for example) are exchanged for Hydrogen ions in a vessel containing strong base cation resin in the form of Hydrogen (H+); then the water is passed through a second vessel containing strong base anion resin in the form of Hydroxyl (OH-), where all negatively charged ions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and so on) are exchanged for hydrogen ions.
